CDE Events at Tech & Society Week 2024 (April 8-12)
The Center for Digital Ethics hosted exciting special events showcasing CDE faculty research, student work, and conversation during Georgetown’s third annual Tech & Society Week—a week of events across campus, exploring various issues at the nexus of technology and society.
Monday, April 8, 2024 | Meet & Greet with Tech & Society Faculty 2-3 pm Healey Family Student Center, Social Room
CDE Director and TES Director Prof. Laura DeNardis, along with CDE core faculty Prof. Cal Newport and Prof. Meg Leta Jones, discussed Georgetown’s interdisciplinary undergraduate programs in Technology, Ethics and Society (TES). Students learned about their research and the courses they’re teaching and developing.

As part of the “What Makes Us Human in the Age of AI” series co-organized by the Center for Digital Ethics and Georgetown Humanities Initiative, a conversation with NYT best-selling author and Georgetown professor Cal Newport about his work on a groundbreaking new philosophy for pursuing meaningful accomplishment while avoiding overload. A conversation about how to reject “busyness” as usual and embrace a healthier understanding of productivity.

An internationally recognized authority on technology and society, boyd is a partner researcher at Microsoft Research, an advanced research laboratory where she studies how technology and society interact, with a focus on how structural inequalities are reconfigured through technology. boyd is also the founder of Data & Society, an independent research institute, and author of It’s Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens. In 2021 boyd joined Georgetown as a visiting distinguished professor, accelerating a university-wide initiative on technology, ethics, governance and public policy.

Global Cyber Policy student teams gave presentations demonstrating their AI-generated image, video, or text, explaining how they made it, analyzing the political implications, such as to national security or democracy, and explaining relevant policy recommendations that address these implications.
